Why Can’t I Type or Chat in Among Us?

No matter if you’re an impostor or part of the crew, convincing the other players to vote your way in Among Us plays a big part in winning. Sometimes, the responses generated with the Quick Chat wheel get overlooked, as they might lack specificity.

Let’s explore a few reasons why you can’t type in Among Us as well as their solutions.

Innersloth Is Updating Among Us

There’s a chance the problem is not on your end. Among Us developer, Innersloth, constantly releases new game updates or patches to fix any bugs. When this happens, some of the game’s functionalities, including the chat, could be affected. You can check Innersloth’s Twitter account and find out if there are any problems regarding the game’s functionality.

If you can’t find any relevant information on Twitter, we’ll show you a couple of fixes that you should try, so you can use the chat as usual.

You’re Playing as a Guest

Sometimes, Among Us will display a sign-in error when launching the game. In this case, you’ll have to use a guest account to keep playing.

A guest account will remove some of the game’s features, meaning you’ll be stuck using Quick Chat.

While the Quick Chat wheel has plenty of options that can help you win, the truth is you might be disadvantaged against users typing in Free Chat. If you want to make your case against another player, Free Chat is your best tool.

To fix this problem, exit the game and launch it again. If you still can’t sign in to your account, there could be a problem with the login functions.

You’re Not Over 18

When you first launch Among Us, you have to enter your birthdate. If you didn’t want to waste any time with it and just entered a random date, this might be the source of your problem. Innersloth decided that users under the age of 18 can only use the Quick Chat option as an additional safety measure.

You can create a new account and be sure you set your age to 18 or above. But if you don’t want to lose your game progress, there’s a workaround that you can use to change your age on desktop.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to (C:) > Users > Name > AppData > LocalLow > Innersloth > Among Us.
  3. There, search for playerPrefs and open it with Notepad.
  4. Look for a string of numbers that correspond to the birthday you selected when you first launched the game. For example, July 30, 2012, would correspond to 7,30,2012.

  5. Change the date and save the file before closing it.
  6. Launch the game and check if you can now use the Free Chat.

If you prefer playing games on your phone, you can change your age in Among Us for Android. From the Settings menu, tap Apps & Updates. Then, head to Among Us > Storage. There, tap Clear Data. Now, the game should prompt you to enter your birthday when launching it.

Unfortunately, the process isn’t that smooth when it comes to changing your age in Among Us for iOS. You will have to delete and reinstall the game to enter a new birthdate.

You’re Using Quick Chat Instead of Free Chat

If you’re an Among Us veteran, you know things sometimes get heated. Maybe you wanted to play without facing the internet trolls, deactivated Free Chat, and forgot about it. To re-enable it, click Find Game, and from Chat Type, select Free Chat.

Use the Free Chat in Among Us

If you can’t type or chat in Among Us, the solutions we’ve listed above will help you solve this issue. Hopefully, setting the chat type or changing your age in Among Us is enough to get you typing again.

If you’re a Mac user and feel as if you’re missing out on the fun, there’s no need to fret. You can now install Among Us on Mac. You just need to know a few tricks for it.
