Michael Keaton Reveals Why He Decided To Return To Batman Role

Michael Keaton has revealed why he decided to return to the role of Batman for the DC Extended universe.

In mid-2020 it was revealed that Michael Keaton was in talks to reprise his role as Batman for The Flash. Last year it was officially confirmed after some concerns over Covid-19. Since then, it appeared as if Keaton would be the DC Extended Universe’s Batman going forward. Ben Affleck was set to retire from the role while Robert Pattinson did his own film universe with Matt Reeves. Recent developments, however, have brought Keaton’s role into question.

Late last month it was revealed that Ben Affleck would be reprising his role as Batman for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Some have even speculated that he was brought on for reshoots to replace Michael Keaton due to a release date shakeup with the DC Universe films. In addition, the Batgirl film, set to co-star Michael Keaton was shelved for unknown reasons. Keaton, however, isn’t revealing what is happening with his role but has revealed why he came back to it.

In a recent interview with Variety, Michael Keaton opened up on why he decided to return to the role of Batman for the DC Extended Universe, thinking it would be fun and wanted to see how people would react:

“It seemed like fun. I was curious what it would be like after this many years. Not so much me doing it — obviously, some of that — but I was just curious about it, weirdly, socially. This whole thing is gigantic. They have their entirely own world. So, I like to look at it as an outsider, thinking ‘Holy moly!’”

Directed by Andy Muschietti from a script written by Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson, The Flash is inspired by the Flashpoint comic book storyline, which followed Barry Allen as he navigated an altered DC Universe. Written by Geoff Johns and penciled by Andy Kuber, Flashpoint radically altered the status of the DC Comics universe and led to the launch of the New 52 titles.

In addition to Ezra Miller, The Flash also features Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck as two separate versions of Batman, Ron Livingston as Henry Allen, Maribel Verdú as Nora Allen, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Antje Traue as Faora-Ul and Sasha Calle as Supergirl. Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Rudy Mancuso, and Luke Brandon Field are also on board in undisclosed roles.
