‘House Of The Dragon’ Showrunners On ‘Lord Of The Rings’ Comparisons

House of the Dragon showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik discuss the comparisons between the show and Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: Rings Of Power.

Way back in 2019, it was revealed that the first official spinoff in the Game of Thrones franchise, House of the Dragon received a straight-to-series order. Another prequel series based on the Tales of Dunk and Egg books are also in development as is a sequel that will focus on Kit Harrington’s Jon Snow. However, when House of the Dragon premiers it won’t be the only fantasy series in town.

In 2017, Amazon revealed that it had acquired a portion of the rights to The Lord of the Rings franchise and was developing a new TV series based on the property. It was eventually revealed that the show would be based around the Second Age of Middle-Earth and focus on the rise of Sauron, the creation of the Rings of Power. What is clear is that comparisons between the two series will be inevitable.

While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, House of the Dragon co-showrunner Ryan Condald discussed these inevitable comparisons. His big hope however was, rather than one show beating the other, that both find big audiences and be successful:

“My hope is that both series work and find a huge fanbase and that there’s a huge overlap in the fanbase. I think the more big, expensive — really expensive — fantasies that work on television, the better for us fans because they’ll make more of them. I desperately want Rings of Power to work. I’m going to be there watching it the first night it’s available, I will watch all of them.”

Here is the synopsis for the Game of Thrones spin-off series:

Based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, the series will tell the story of House Targaryen (a.k.a. the House that gave us the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen) and take place 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan J. Condal serve as co-showrunners on House of the Dragon and are executive producing alongside George R. R. Martin. The series features a star-studded cast that includes Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Paddy Considine, Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best and Sonoya Mizuno.
