‘Harley Quinn’ References David Ayer Cut Of ‘Suicide Squad’

The Harley Quinn animated series made a reference to the David Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad.

HBO Max’s original animated series Harley Quinn is an irreverent send up of the DC Universe told through the twisted perspective of its titular antiheroine and her ragtag group of friends that include Poison Ivy, King Shark, and Clayface. The series isn’t afraid to reference certain elements of the live-action DC Extended Universe, and in this case, we got a surprise reference to the David Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad.

In Harley Quinn episode 302 titled, “There’s No Ivy In Team,” there’s a scene involving Batman and Robin together in the Batcave in which we see on the computer a few files. One of those files is simply dubbed, “The Ayer Cut.”

When speaking with CinemaBlend, showrunner Patrick Schumacker discussed the Suicide Squad David Ayer Cut Easter Egg featured in Harley Quinn:

“There’s a scene in the Batcave where on the Batcomputer, we have the sort of traditional desktop with folders, and it’s kind of a blink-and-you-miss-it thing, but if you do pause, there’s some interesting stuff on that setup, Batman might have a copy of the Ayer Cut.”

This isn’t the first time the Harley Quinn animated series referenced fan movements. Besides this reference to the David Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad, the “Release the Snyder Cut” movement was referenced in a previous episode, in which a fan is shown wearing a t-shirt with that statement when having a discussion with a friend who is wearing a t-shirt that reads, “The Last Jedi isn’t canon.”

Here is the synopsis for the upcoming season of Harley Quinn:
