Doctor Strange 2 Writer Says The Film Almost Included Deadpool’s MCU Debut

Michael Waldron, writer of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, confirmed that Deadpool was considered for a cameo role in the Marvel movie.

In the lead-up to the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, rampant fan speculation saw rumors that just about every non-MCU Marvel movie character – and different versions of a few characters who have appeared in the MCU – would cameo in the multiverse movie. Of course, this proved to be the case for Professor X, who was played by a returning Patrick Stewart, and Reed Richards, with John Krasinski becoming the third actor to play the role. However, other options were considered in the early stages of pre-production and Michael Waldron has confirmed that Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth was one of those options.

Deadpool is expected to join the MCU in his third movie, which it has been suggested will be the MCU’s first R-rated movie. While the Deadpool movies have so far been produced by Fox, Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox (now renamed 20th Century Studios) saw the Marvel Studios regain the film rights to the X-Men and associated characters, such as Deadpool. In light of the popularity of Ryan Reynolds’ take on the Merc with a Mouth, Marvel Studios were quick to confirm that the acquisition would not put an end to his Deadpool film series.

With Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness featuring Benedict Cumberbatch’s sorcerer traveling to alternate universes and encountering an alternate version of Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, some fans expected to see the film usher Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool into the MCU. In an interview with ComicBook.com, writer Michael Waldron has now confirmed this option was discussed early on in the film’s development and, while it may never have made it beyond the drawing board, it’s exciting to hear that the creative minds at Marvel Studios are now looking for opportunities to include characters like Deadpool:

“Yeah, we talked about it… I think we talked about everything in this movie. So, [it] would’ve been crazy to not raise that, but it ultimately didn’t feel like… It just didn’t feel the right place. But yeah, of course we talked about it.”

Waldron is probably right to point out that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness wouldn’t have been the right place for a Deadpool cameo. The majority of the film’s alternate universe characters were depicted as members of the Illuminati – Earth-838’s collective made up of the greatest minds in the world. Wade Wilson, as a motor-mouthed mutant mercenary, wouldn’t really have fit the bill. He’s also not a character who was likely to fit in anywhere else within the movie’s magic-oriented, reality-hopping plot. However, this could be a sign that fans won’t have to wait too much longer for the character to join the MCU.
