Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ends on an ambiguous note for Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff and writer Michael Waldron has addressed whether or not she survives.
In the final moments of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Wanda almost gets what she’s wanted all along. Her desire to reunite with the children she created and then lost in WandaVision almost comes to fruition as she uses America Chavez’s powers to break into a world where her boys still exist. However, confronted with her children’s terror as she attacks her alternate self, Wanda suddenly realizes the error of her ways and surrenders her mission. She then destroys the Darkhold from which she has gained her dark new powers, bringing the castle at the top of Mount Wundagore crumbling down on top of her to do so.
It is implied Wanda does not survive, but Michael Waldron has now weighed in on the discussion surrounding her ultimate fate. Wanda’s death is not explicitly shown on screen and, in a Marvel movie, that ambiguity is enough to suggest a character is not done yet. Elizabeth Olsen’s performance in the role of Wanda has also proved incredibly popular with fans and it is likely Marvel will want to keep her around. Speaking to Variety, Waldron revealed:
“I think that’s up for interpretation. She made some kind of sacrificial act that destroyed the Darkhold in every universe, which is protecting Wanda in every universe from being seduced by the Darkhold. Whether she’s dead or not remains to be seen. I know what it’s like to love characters and to not want them to be gone and to hate when they do bad things. But that’s that’s part of the fun of watching stuff and getting swept up in it.”
Wanda’s dramatic transition from hero to villain, which gradually revealed itself over the course of the events of WandaVision before reaching its climax in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, has been one of the most engaging and surprising character arcs of the MCU. While it is not yet clear where that story will go next, it looks unlikely Elizabeth Olsen is finished with Wanda.
