Doctor Strange 2 Star Elizabeth Olsen On Losing Roles Due To Marvel Ties

Elizabeth Olsen, who recently returned to the MCU as the Scarlet Witch in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, has talked about losing out on other work due to her Marvel commitments.

Elizabeth Olsen has been an MCU staple since she first appeared as Wanda Maximoff in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. Since then, Wanda has been on a journey that has seen her master her powers, fall in love with and then lose Paul Bettany’s Vision, and become the terrifying Scarlet Witch. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness saw Wanda on a darker path, racked with grief and corrupted by the powers of the Darkhold.

While Wanda has been on a shocking and intriguing journey throughout her time in the MCU so far, actress Elizabeth Olsen recently opened up about the difficulties of making such a long term commitment to her role with Marvel Studios. In a recent interview with the New York Times, Olsen spoke about how her Marvel contract had prevented her pursuing other roles and the frustration that came with losing out on work that was closer to her indie film roots, saying:

“It took me away from the physical ability to do certain jobs that I thought were more aligned with the things I enjoyed as an audience member…

“I started to feel frustrated. I had this job security but I was losing these pieces that I felt were more part of my being. And the further I got away from that, the less I became considered for it.”

Despite struggling with having to miss out on other opportunities, Olsen also admitted she would consider starring in a Scarlet Witch solo movie for Marvel if the story was right:

“I think I would. But it really needs to be a good story. I think these films are best when it’s not about creating content, but about having a very strong point of view — not because you need to have a three-picture plan.”

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness certainly sees Wanda expressing “a very strong point of view” – the film introduces audiences to a Wanda who is prepared to kill the young America Chavez in order to find a version of her lost children who still exist elsewhere in the multiverse, apparently planning to take them away from their real mother, their version of her. The film ends on an ambiguous note for Wanda, meaning she could well return to the MCU in either a tale of redemption or a further fall into darkness.
