Christian Bale Was Told The Dark Knight Trilogy Wouldn’t Work

The Dark Knight trilogy radically reinvented not just Batman, but all of supehero cinema, but star Christian Bale remembers a time when people weren’t so sure it could work.

Director Christopher Nolan set out to create a Batman who could almost exist in the real world when he began work on 2005’s Batman Begins with Christian Bale in the leading role. The film delved deeper into the character’s psychology to construct a grounded new imagining of the classic hero.

While the three films – particularly 2008’s The Dark Knight – garnered widespread praise from fans and critics alike, Christian Bale remembers that people weren’t always so sure it would work.

With superhero films of every stripe now dominating theaters – from action comedies like the Guardians of the Galaxy movies to gritty crime thrillers like The Batman – it’s easy to forget the genre wasn’t always regarded as being so versatile.

Back when Christian Bale’s Batman Begins was still in the works, superhero films were still playing up to comic book stereotypes. Of course, Sam Raimi’s first two Spider-Man films had been massive hits before Begins landed, but they embraced being bright, corny and fun.

Talking to The Washington Post ahead of the release of his latest superhero movie performance in Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder, Christian Bale revealed that people he spoke to ahead of Batman Begins‘ release seemed unconvinced by the premise.

“I would [tell people] we’re going to sort of do Batman, but take him seriously,” Bale recalled. “I had tons of people laugh at me and just say, ‘Well, that’s just not going to work at all.’”

“It’s wonderful to be a part of a trilogy that proved those people wrong,” the actor added. “I’m not certain if it kickstarted [the Marvel Cinematic Universe] but it certainly helped along the way.” It’s certainly safe to say that the Dark Knight trilogy changed superhero movies for years to come.

Christian Bale is trading in superheroics for supervillainy in his latest role in Thor: Love and Thunder. Here is the synopsis:

The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, the film stars Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Taika Waititi, Russell Crowe, Natalie Portman, Jaimie Alexander, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.
