Bridgerton Recasts Francesca with Hannah Dodd for Season 3

Hannah Dodd is the new Francesca Bridgerton. On Thursday, Deadline reported that Bridgerton has officially recast its Francesca, who was played by Ruby Stokes in the first two seasons. Dodd will take over the role starting in season 3, and with the recasting comes news that the character will likely be featured more prominently in upcoming episodes.

With Stokes in the role, Francesca has been seen very little in previous seasons. She had two appearances in season 1 but seemed to be off to a better start with season 2 by appearing in the second season’s first three episodes. Francesca has since disappeared, and while her character’s absence wasn’t addressed, her sudden vanishing was due to scheduling conflicts with her other series Lockwood & Co. Her exit was previously reported on by the press but a replacement hasn’t been announced until now.

“I love Francesca, but we lost her midway through season 2,” series creator Chris Van Dusen said in March, per TVLine. “After exhausting all other options, she unfortunately had to come out due to reasons beyond our control. Perhaps season 3 will be the charm.”

Bridgerton is based on an original novel series by Julia Quinn. Each installment of the novels has served as the basis of inpiration for different seasons of Bridgerton, each one focusing on a different sibling’s love story. Francesca slips into the central role for her shot at love in the sixth book, When He Was Wicked, which would presumably serve as the sixth season of Bridgerton if Netflix takes the series that far. There are eight books in the novel series.

Bridgerton Is One of Netflix’s Most Watched Shows

Chris Van Dusen developed Bridgerton for Netflix and serves as series showrunner. From Shondaland and Netflix, the series is executive produced by Van Dusen, Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers, and Tom Verica. It stars Jonathan Bailey (Lord Anthony Bridgerton), Simone Ashley (Kate), Adjoa Andoh (Lady Danbury), Lorraine Ashbourne (Mrs. Varley), Harriet Cains (Philipa Featherington), Bessie Carter (Prudence Featherington), Shelley Conn (Mary Sharma), Nicola Coughlan (Penelope Featherington), Phoebe Dynevor (Daphne Basset), Ruth Gemmell (Violet Bridgerton), Florence Hunt (Hyacinth Bridgerton), Martins Imhangbe (Will Mondrich), Claudia Jessie (Eloise Bridgerton), Calam Lynch (Theo Sharpe), Luke Newton (Colin Bridgerton), Golda Rosheuvel (Queen Charlotte), Luke Thompson (Benedict Bridgerton), Will Tilston (Gregory Bridgerton), Polly Walker (Portia Featherington), Rupert Young (Jack), and Julie Andrews as the voice of Lady Whistledown.

We know that there will be at least four seasons of the series. Netflix previously renewed Bridgerton for seasons 3 and 4 based on the success of the first two seasons. Reviews for the series have been pretty strong and viewership has also been very high. Season 2 alone surpassed 193 million viewing hours in it opening weekend, which was the highest ever for any English-language series on Netflix. The streamer is infamous for canceling shows too soon, but if Bridgerton maintains its popularity throughout seasons 3 and 4, then this could end up becoming one to go the distance.

Bridgerton can be found streaming on Netflix. Season 3 does not yet have a premiere date.
